Disclaimer: All pictures, except the Chamber of Commerce building, were taken on previous trips to Port Gibson.
Usually I go through Port Gibson on weekends, but this was early on a Friday morning and we caught the Port Gibson Chamber of Commerce open.
Found out that the building housing the Chamber of Commerce was the second building ever built in Port Gibson.
The lovely lady in the Camber of Commerce was full of wonderful information about the area. Basically, and these are my words, the town of Port Gibson is dying. The Chamber of Commerce is doing everything they can; contacting supervisors, hosting events, and having studies done in order to revive Port Gibson and Claiborne County. Several new stores are coming to the downtown area (including an antique store!) in the hopes to bring people back.
I was glad to hear that several of the houses that have been for sale in Port Gibson are being bought up and brought back to life. One of these is Idlewild. The renovations are suppose to begin around Christmas and when they are done this will become a house to tour in Port Gibson! On a sad note, the beautiful old Oak Square Bed and Breakfast is still for sale and in need of some love...so if any of our readers out there want a project and a beautiful antebellum home in Port Gibson on historic Church Street...have I got the house for you!
Port Gibson has so much history and it should be a destination everyone wants to check out. "The City to Pretty to Burn," according to Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War, is still a beautiful place! The main through-fare, Church St.(aka Hwy 61), is loaded with antebellum homes and churches over 100 years old. Port Gibson also has a wonderfully informative driving tour guide that can be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce. We will be working on this in the near future!
Make a stop in Port Gibson! Just driving through can take your breathe away If you are feeling spunky, and have a full belly
Don't forget to stop at the Chamber of Commerce! You can really open your eyes to all of the wonderful things in, and in the future of, Port Gibson, MS.
Until next time,
Rosemary
